What the … ?

Spam!

Yesterday I kept deleting spam that Akismet had caught for this blog. I didn’t keep track but it was coming in fast – 10 here, 30 there, 46 and so on. I’m sure I caught over 200 spam messages on this blog alone yesterday. The others were hopping too, but not anywhere near as much as this blog.

Today … I moderated a comment on my photoblog. While I was behind the scenes on that blog I noticed that I had 339 spam messages waiting for me to decide what to do with. Have you ever gone through that much spam on your blog at once to figure out if any are real messages? Then I checked my other blogs. Four more of them had spam too. I came up with a grand total of 479 spam messages today from 7 a.m. ’til 3 p.m on a total of 5 blogs.

I get enough spam in my email. I don’t need it in my blogs too!

Cease and Desist would you.

Try installing the Bad Behavior plugin – its takes a different approach to AKismet and on my (admittedly smaller) blog has 100% success rate. 246 attempts stopped in the last 7 days, not one through…

Welcome to the real world ๐Ÿ™
I got tired of browsing through the spam in Akismet. I installed two plugins: One that disables commenting on old posts (after a set time) and another one, the math plugin. Both are very simple, but work amazingly well. Haven’t received any spam since installing them!

I just came to look for your photo hunt, but apparently you haven’t posted it yet – but then again, you’re not on Saturday yet, I’m a bit ahead of you ๐Ÿ™‚

I myself don’t like the idea of turning off comments on my posts even if they are older. Though it’s not with them my biggest problem lay.

I don’t like to make it harder for my commenters to comment either, like the math plugin.

I know that many also use the Bad behaviour plugin, I’ve been thinking of testing that one since it seems to stop the spam BEFORE the comments is posted to your blog. I love that.

Let me know if you test it. As I’ll if I make it before you ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh wow. I guess I need to be more diligent.
I have only had one spam.
Now I am probably setting myself up for a ton.

I agree with Mrs. Lifecrusier. I don’t want to close comments on my old post. They still get visited and I get real comments on them at times. I’m with using akismet – it catches almost all the spam, occasionally a real post with a link or two in it.

I don’t normally get as much spam as I did yesterday though. If I were to start getting amounts like that daily then yes I probably would take more drastic measures. I normally get between 50 and 100 across all of my blogs. I can handle that.

I am so glad the spammers have not found my new website yet, with blogger they usually don’t bother so much because of the word verification.

Yes, definately implement Bad Behavior, along with Akismet. Also, check out peters custom anti spam image, which is a comment captcha. Very easy to use and modify (http://www.theblog.ca/?p=21)

I went from having about 1000 spams overnight to maybe 8.

Is there no word verification plug ins for WordPress? I am going to look around for one and let you know if I find it.
