Our famlly ritual was to make our own costumes - one year my mom made a robot costume for my brother - it looked great - but he could not walk or bend his legs!!! One year I made both mine and my brothers costume myself - when my brother looked into the mirror he screamed and almost fainted at the terrifying werewolf in the mirror! I have carried on the tradition of making my costumes for me, my husband and my kids. I think it is such fun. And like you, I have already started to think about what I will do this year! We don't celebrate it here in Portugal, although some Pubs and Bars make Halloween theme parties. The only time of the year people dress up with fantasy costumes is in Carnaval (carnival) in February or March depending on the year. It seems Halloween is such fun.
