Jamaica. I went twice, back in my feckless twenties. The first time, we stayed in a private home (very modest) outside of Negril, with the ocean as our backyard. We seriously lucked out the second time I went with a different group of friends. One of my buddies knew someone who had a large house on a hilltop just a few minutes' drive outside of Ocho Rios. House, swimming pool, maid and cook service... we were in pig heaven, I tell you. And it only cost each of us $500 for 7 days, rental car included. We avoided the main cities altogether and stayed in the country, relying on friends-of-friends-and-other-contacts for sightseeing. We went into the jungle and were introduced to a waterfall that very few tourists would ever find on their own. We picked wild mushrooms (yes, <i>those</i> kinds of shrooms... haha!) and ate wild fruit that I have never seen in any grocery store since that day. I need to go back to Jamaica.
